What is an Honorary Consulate?
A consulate is a public service of a country (sending country) established in another country (host country) to maintain relations with Nationals of the sending country living in the host country. Its primary role is to offer protection to the community. It is headed by a Consul.
Who is an Honorary Consul?
An Honorary Consul is a citizen, either from the sending country or from the host country, who volunteers to discharge consular functions. An Honorary Consul can carry out consular functions in addition to his or her professional duties.

What are the functions of an Honorary Consul?

The first function of an Honorary Consul is to protect Nationals and interests of Nationals of the sending country, who may need assistance while residing or transiting in the host country.

The Honorary Consul’s work is to provide administrative support. However, his or her administrative and legal responsibilities are limited.

The Honorary Consul can be authorized, by a decree, to conduct some administrative procedures or to deliver some administrative and legal documents within the limits of the mandate entrusted to him or her.

Consular functions are determined by the provisions of article 5 of the Vienna Convention of 1963 on Consular Relations. The Honorary Consul also serves as an important link in economic and cultural diplomacy.

What the Honorary Consul is not?

The Honorary Consul is not an Ambassador. The Honorary Consul is not a General Consul. The Honorary Consul works with the Ambassador and/or the General Consul of his or her Jurisdiction.

The Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Togo in Kenya is open from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm, Nairobi time, except on public holidays in Kenya and Togo. Special appointments can be booked on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 am Nairobi time.
